Furnace and A/C Filtration Information

Furnace and A/C filtration has an impact on healthy conditions for family members, as well as for the HVAC equipment itself.

We encourage you to use quality filters and to change them often, on the order of one to two months between changes. Filters, which are widely available, often indicate a MERV rating on the packaging that indicates the effectiveness of the filters in removing small particles. A MERV rating of, say, 8 to 10 is good. Thicker but still conventional filters, if you have equipment that can accept them, (3 to 5 inches thick) have far more surface area, and they may go for six months or more between replacements.

Inexpensive spun-material filters (in the range of about $1 each) are a bad idea. They will let virtually anything through them, including enough dirt and dust to eventually plug up heat exchangers, which may lead to replacement of expensive equipment. They can’t protect your equipment, but even more importantly, they can’t protect your family members from inhaling dust, dirt, pollens, and other impurities.

An adult typically breathes more than 2,000 “gallons” of air a day. That’s a lot of potential dust, dirt, pollen, mold and other nasty stuff. You and your family deserve clean air. Consider calling Jack Frost to ask about a truly effective filtration system that will remove and KILL virtually every contaminant in the air in your home.
